SURVEY SAYS

Associate Life
Vault's Verdict: A consensus is building among NP associates, and it reads something like this: “I like my job, but –“

Satisfaction:
• “I am generally happy with the work that I am given.  When I am staffed on deals I am given substantive work and I feel as though I’m adding value to the transaction.”-Real estate associate
• “I'm not sure I'd be ecstatic to be working at any law firm.  This one is pretty decent but the salary cuts and lack of bonuses makes it much less satisfying to work here.”-Midlevel associate
• “I love my job but I am dissatisfied with the salary and bonus structure, which is far below market.”-San Francisco litigator

Nixon Peabody LLP Perspective

Fortune's favorite

Nixon Peabody is in serious expansion mode. The firm has been snapping up hires, absorbing nearly 100 attorneys from defunct Thelen in July 2008. Today the firm ranks as one of the largest law firms in the United States, with 825 attorneys collaborating across 25 major practice areas in 19 office locations, including Albany, Boston, Buffalo, Chicago, Hartford, London, Long Island, Los Angeles, Manchester, New York, Palm Beach Gardens, Paris, Philadelphia, Providence, Rochester, San Francisco, Shanghai, Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. In 2008, The American Lawyer once again named the firm among its Global 100 and, for the third year in a row, Nixon Peabody was lauded by Fortune magazine as one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For." Other honors for the firm include being named to the Human Rights Campaign's 2008 "Best Places To Work For GLBT Equality".

How do I apply for a summer associate position?

NP visits approximately 40 law schools, colleges and career fairs each recruiting season. Law students should check with their career services professionals for information regarding NP and our on-campus dates.

Due to time constraints, we are unable to visit all law schools and colleges, and we welcome law students to directly apply to NP by submitting a cover letter, resume, copy of transcript, and writing sample (10-20 pages) to the recruiting professional in the office(s) of interest for consideration for a summer associate position.

Opportunity

We believe the best way to attract and retain talented new attorneys is to give them a chance to do interesting and challenging work. As a new associate, your responsibilities will go beyond research and document review. You will work on teams that include secretaries, professional specialists, paralegals, senior associates, and partners. It’s not uncommon for first-year associates to have client contact and to take a key role in a case or business transaction. When our associates talk to colleagues in other firms, those colleagues often are surprised by the level of work that first and second year associates at Nixon Peabody are doing.

Tips from the inside

Nixon Peabody seeks applicants who are “motivated, reliable, self-starters with proven legal skills,” reports a junior associate. Another associate describes the ideal candidate as a, “smart, dedicated individual who will demonstrate commitment to the firm, its clients and the community.” “Nixon really sees itself as a large regional firm and is therefore willing to interview at schools others wouldn't recruit from heavily (if at all),” says a junior litigator and,”GPA targets are flexible for applicants who help with diversity.” The hiring process is standard, consisting of an initial on-campus interview followed by various call back interviews.
